The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations
We throw away a more than a million tonnes of household electrical and electronic waste every year in the UK. Electrical goods are one of fastest growing waste streams in the UK, growing by 5% each year.
Until now, most waste electrical equipment has been put into landfill, where metals and other substances contained in these items can cause contamination, this can then lead to harmful effects on the environment and health. Much of this waste can be recycled, recovering resources for use in new products and reducing environmental and health risks.
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations have been introduced in order to reduce the volume of electrical items disposed of in landfill and to promote recycling and re-use of these products. They will also encourage everyone to play a part in protecting the environment for the future.
Distributor Take-back Scheme
Garraways support these regulations and in order to fulfill our obligations we have joined the Distributor Take-back Scheme (DTS). The DTS supports a national network of collection facilities where consumers can dispose of their household electrical and electronic equipment free of charge for environmentally sound treatment and recycling. The scheme will make funds available to establish and upgrade these facilities in the UK.
Look for the symbol
Electrical and Electronic Equipment that was made after June 2006 should display cross bin symbol on the packaging or product. It means that the product is covered by the WEEE Regulations and every effort should be made to recycle it.
Recycle your old electrical and electronic eqipment
Please ensure that your old equipment is recycled in accordance with the WEEE regulations. Please do not put it with your domestic waste as this will prevent it from being recycled.
