The New Year brings a new start, a chance to get fit and health, cut back on those overindulged vices like chocolate, cake and coffee… hmmm well maybe you don’t have to give up coffee.

There are many studies into the benefits of coffee before exercise, if you need an excuse then here are 3 reasons you should drink coffee before exercise.

1. Boosts Endurance

A recent study in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism has revealed that between three and seven milligrams per kilogram of body weight of caffeine from coffee increased endurance by an average of 24 per cent.

In the nine trials researched by Mr Higgins, the participants cycled or ran after drinking coffee and the results revealed that endurance was ‘noticeably improved’.(1)

2. Improve Circulation

A study presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions in 2013, revealed that drinking a cup of caffeinated coffee significantly improved blood flow.

Participants who drank a cup of caffeinated coffee had a 30 percent increase in blood flow over a 75-minute period compared to those who drank decaffeinated coffee.(2)

3. Burn More Calories

A Study in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism revealed that trained athletes who took in caffeine pre-exercise burned around 15 percent more calories post-exercise, compared to those who ingested a placebo.(3)

Further research is needed to discover the overall benefits of drinking coffee before exercise, however these studies show that one or two cups before exercise wont hurt.

It is important to be aware that too much caffeine can decrease performance and may lead to insomnia, anxiety, headaches, palpitations and high blood pressure. Make sure to stay hydrated while exercising and drink plenty of water during and after.
